A rare pure embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the urinary bladder in an adult successfully managed with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and surgery: a case report

Abstract: BackgroundRhabdomyosarcoma of the urinary bladder in adults is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm that develops from the bladder wall.Case presentationWe report our experience of a rare case of rhabdomyosarcoma of the bladder in a 45-year-old Moroccan man who was successfully managed with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and surgical excision of the mass; he was disease free at 24-month follow up.ConclusionsTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a rare embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the blad… Show more

“…The therapeutic options include total or partial cystectomy, transurethral resection of the bladder, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. 2 , 4 In our case, RMS was diagnosed at the metastatic stage, which is why we opted for chemotherapy after TURB, which allowed the cessation of hematuria. In case of localized RMS, the gold standard remains radical cystectomy associated with bilateral lymph node dissection.…”

“…3 This radical surgery may be preceded by neo-adjuvant chemotherapy. 4 Radiation therapy adjuvant to surgery gives excellent results in case of embryonal RMS of the bladder in children. 5 Partial cystectomy can be proposed in young subjects who have a desire to father a child, when the tumor is small (less than 3 cm) and located at the level of the dome but it is imperative to ensure healthy surgical margins.…”

“…In literature, there is a paucity of successful reports of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and adjuvant radiotherapy for adult RMS. 17,18 From 1989 to 2009, Wang et al published a case series of 25 adult soft tissue prostate tumors (six were RMS) demonstrating that chemotherapy did not improve overall survival. 19 Given our findings, it is plausible that specific subtypes of soft tissue tumors in the prostate, like RMS, may be responsive to chemotherapy.…”
