A Rare Case of Poisoning with a Volatile Substance: Quantitative Determination of n‐Butane in Postmortem Tissue

Abstract: Poisoning with volatile substances remains exceptional. Authors report the case of a married couple who were found in a car with a butane gas bottle: the woman was dead and her husband alleged it was an unsuccessful suicide pact. A specific research of volatile substances on postmortem samples with headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry following a quantitative determination was performed. The n-butane concentrations detected were composed of 610 μg/L (cardiac blood), 50 μg/kg (brain), 134 μg/kg (lungs… Show more

“…Two patients inhaled liquefied petroleum gas, a propane/butane gas mixture. To facilitate reading, data are summarized in Table 1 for survivors 8,13–22 and Table 2 for fatalities 1–4,14,15,18,20,23–43 . Patients were predominantly males (81%) aged between 11 and 70 years (mean age ± SD, 23 ± 13 years).…”

“…1,3,[5][6][7][8][9][10][11] The post-mortem analysis of the effect of these gases on biological fluids and tissues is performed by gas chromatography (GC-MS, (HS)-GC-MS). 6,9,12 Case report Here, we report the case of a 30-year-old man of Belarusian origin found dead in his house (room temperature: 26 C). The body was in the kitchen, in a supine position with a black plastic bag wrapped around the head with a gas hose that passed through a hole in it, which had been connected to a domestic LPG cylinder tank.…”

“…Intoxication and death with gases is reported in many cases [7,11,12], either accidents or suicides. Gases such as nitrogen [13, 14], carbon monoxide [6,7], carbon dioxide [15,16], helium [8][9][10][11][12], air [4], butane [17], hydrogen sulfide [18-20], nitrous oxide [21] were reported as cause of death.…”
