A rapid ion chromatography column-switching method for online sample pretreatment and determination ofl-carnitine, choline and mineral ions in milk and powdered infant formula

Abstract: A simple and rapid column-switching ion chromatography with non-suppressed conductivity detection method was developed for simultaneous determination of l-carnitine, choline and mineral ions in milk and powdered infant formula samples.

“…IC as a special mode of LC has already proven to be a powerful tool for the analysis of ionic compounds, mostly inorganic anions and cations in water samples and biological fluids [98] as well as small organic compounds in a broad range of sample types such as milk [99] or biological fluids [100], but also environmental samples [101]. For reliable IC analysis, e.g., of wastewater treatment effluents, sample preparation is often mandatory given the high matrix (salt) load of many environmental samples (see section Sample preparation in environmental matrices).…”

“…Actually, in the last two decades, less than 10% of scientific reports on the application of IC in food matrices were dedicated to the analysis of cations. An IC column-switching method with non-suppressed conductivity detection to measure, among the others, free calcium ions in milk and MIF appeared in the literature (Wei, Wang, Wang, & Zhu, 2017). The sample treatment prior to columnswitching system was required, and it consisted in milk protein precipitation, centrifugation and filtration of the supernatant.…”

“…[45][46][47][48] Since last two decades, an online column-switching technique for heart-cutting is extensively utilized for complex samples clean-up and concentration to reduce matrix interferences. [49][50][51][52] However, most of the reported online extraction techniques use the mini hydrophobic column as pre-treatment column which unable to complete elimination of matrix interferences from analytes of interest and matrices co-elute and transfer along the analytes of interest in second dimension column. This drawback is severe in the case of polar analytes.…”
