A randomized trial on the effects of regular water intake in patients with recurrent headaches

Abstract: Considering the observed positive subjective effects, it seems reasonable to recommend headache patients to try this non-invasive intervention for a short period of time to see whether they experience improvement.

“…Maintenance of biological rhythms is important in maintaining health, i.e., ultradian (e.g., feeding cycles) [2], circadian (e.g., cycles of sleep, digestive secretions, bowel movements) [3], infradian (e.g., menstrual cycles) [3], and diurnal rhythms (circadian rhythms synchronized with day-night cycle) [4]. Lifestyle behaviors of sleep [5], exercise [6][7][8], mealtime pattern [9] and hydration status [10] are known to independently affect migraine occurrence. Individual-customized daily aerobic exercise, daily scheduled stress management and relaxation techniques, and mindfulnessbased stress reduction prevent migraine [5], while inadequate sleep hygiene, non-restorative sleep, skipping meals, and dehydration can trigger migraine [11][12][13][14].…”

“…Outcomes to reflect changes in water intake were primarily reported using objective measures of 24 h urine volume (10‐21) and 24 h water turnover, the gold standard . Self‐report through fluid intake diaries was also utilized, ranging from 1 to 7 days . Eight out of the 16 studies were randomised controlled trials (RCT), while the others were non‐randomised and/or non‐controlled trials.…”

“…Two studies employed instructions together with education (Table ) . A long‐term intervention study in two neighbouring towns situated in the Judean Desert Mountains found a similar increase in water intake in both towns (intervention and control) after 3 years .…”

“…26,27 Considering the myriad health advantages of proper hydration and its relatively low burden, 28 patients with migraine may be coached toward consistently meeting the existing fluid intake standards. Existing trials of fluid intake interventions to prevent migraine were not adequately designed to detect differences nor recommend specific fluid levels.…”
