A Randomized Controlled Trial to Examine the Posttreatment Efficacy of Neurofeedback, Behavior Therapy, and Pharmacology on ADHD Measures

Abstract: From a global perspective, behavior therapy had the most extensive results, but PH had the greatest capacity to improve overall attention. NF was able to improve both control response and inattention. Clinical implications are discussed.

“…The other analyses using data from stimulant treatment groups were less conclusive. The results calculated using probably blinded measures and pre–post differences had high heterogeneity if Moreno-García, Meneres-Sancho, Camacho-Vara de Rey, and Servera’s (2019) data were included. When this study was eliminated from the analyses, significant heterogeneity disappeared and significant effect sizes in favor of stimulant treatment were obtained, but only four and three studies were incorporated in the analyses (inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, respectively).…”

“…With regard to neurofeedback groups versus stimulant treatment group results, in recent years, new RCTs have appeared that allowed us to compare the effects of these treatments (a total of six studies in our analyses, see Table 2), including four studies in 2017-2018 (Duric, Assmus, Gundersen, Duric-Golos, & Elgen, 2017; Geladé et al, 2018; Moreno-García et al, 2019; Sudnawa et al, 2018). Until now, to the authors’ knowledge, no meta-analysis had been able to include the minimum number of these conditions in studies to report some conclusion.…”

“…The Neurofeedback-based therapy in ADHD treatment is still a controversial method compared to pharmacological or behavioral ones; however, it is becoming more and more popular due to the increasing number of publications describing its positive results (Bluschke et al, 2016;Moreno-Garcia et al, 2015;Moreno-Garcia et al, 2019). The vast body of literature in the Neurofeedback field suggests that specific bandwidths are associated with particular cognitive functions.…”

“…Secondary outcomes will be the number of dropouts for any reasons at the end of the intervention (and, if available, at follow-up) and neuropsychological laboratory-based measures of working memory (e.g., The visual spatial working memory task, [ 38 ] attention (e.g., Test of Variables of Attention, [ 39 , 40 ] Attention Endurance Test (d2) [ 41 ] ), and inhibition (e.g., Integrated Visual and Auditory Continuous Performance Test).
