A Randomised Comparison of the Effects of Nebivolol and Atenolol with and without Chlorthalidone on??the Sexual Function of Hypertensive Men

Abstract: Increased release of nitric oxide associated with nebivolol may counteract the detrimental effect of beta-blockade on penile erection, thereby allowing maintenance of sexual activity in previously untreated hypertensive men compared with a significant decrease observed in the sexual activity of men receiving atenolol-based treatment.

“…For example, the ␤-blocker nebivolol, which has direct vasodilating properties, is less likely to cause ED than are other ␤-blockers. [124][125][126] Angiotensin receptor blockers are also less likely to cause ED than are other antihypertensive agents (eg, diuretics). 127,128 There have been several reports of improvements in erectile function among men using statins with and without PDE5 inhibitors.…”

“…Previous studies have investigated the effect of beta-blockers on the endothelial functions and showed that only carvedilol and nebivolol had an improving effect on the endothelial functions (24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30)(31). Although some studies have investigated the effect of beta-blockers on the endothelial function, there is not any study that explored the specific effect of beta-blockers on the endothelium-dependent vasodilatation in patients with BD.…”
