A quantitative study of motion estimation methods on 4D cardiac gated SPECT reconstruction

Abstract: Purpose: Motion-compensated temporal processing can have a major impact on improving the image quality in gated cardiac single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). In this work, we investigate the effect of different optical flow estimation methods for motion-compensated temporal processing in gated SPECT. In particular, we explore whether better motion estimation can substantially improve reconstructed image quality, and how the estimated motion would compare to the ideal case of known motion in terms… Show more

“…Next, the cardiac gates of each respiratory phase were registered with respect to the reference respiratory phase and averaged to obtain a preliminary reconstruction. The optical flow method was then applied to these cardiac gates to estimate the cardiac motion field as in [6,7].…”

“…The lack of cardiac motion correction could also lead to inaccurate modeling of the tissue-fraction effect in the templates. Since respiratory motion magnitude could be much larger in patients, dual respiratory and cardiac gating 3 and/or motion correction 46,47 are needed to generate motionfree emission data prior to the application of PVC using phase-matched contrast CT data. Furthermore, respiratory and cardiac motion could have a more severe impact on the MPI study than the RBC study due to differences in tracer concentrations in the thinner myocardium compared to the blood pool.…”
