A quantitative method for determining the antiwashout characteristics of cement‐based dental materials including mineral trioxide aggregate

Abstract: The modified CRD-C 661-06 method provided repeatable results that were comparable to the simulated clinical method. The antiwashout gel used with MTA-Plus reduced the material washout and was similar to IRM and amalgam.

“…Although similar in composition to ProRoot MTA, MTA Plus has a finer particle size. It can be used as a root canal sealer when mixed with the gel, which also improves the handling properties and washout resistance (4). Another hydraulic silicate cement root canal sealer is EndoSequence BC Sealer (BC; Brasseler USA, Savannah, GA [also known as iRoot SP Injectable Root Canal Sealer; Innovative BioCeramix Inc, Vancouver, BC, Canada]).…”

“…Such properties make MTA as a suitable material for different treatments including root perforation repair, apexification, direct pulp capping, pulpotomy, and orthograde root canal filling 8) . However, long setting time 9,10) , poor handling characteristics 11) and wash-out upon contact with fluids 12) hamper MTA practicality to use in tooth crown or in one-visit treatment session.…”

“…MTA Plus is provided with either a hydrosoluble gel or water ampoules for mixing. When used with anti-washout gel, its washout was reduced [ 65 ]. The high specifi c surface area increases the rate of reaction but does not necessarily reduce the setting time.…”
