Nach kurzen epidemiologischen Erörterungen werden die ätiologischen Faktoren aus genetischer, infektiöser, diätetischer, toxikologischer, immunologischer, psychosozialer und angiologischer Sicht dargestellt. An insgesamt neun Abbildungen werden die pathomorphologischen Unterscheidungsmerkmale der beiden Erkrankungsformen verdeutlicht, wobei dies durch klinisch-symptomatologische und daraus abgeleitete diagnostische Schwerpunkte unterstrichen wird. Die konservative Behandlung umfaβt neben allgemeinen Maβnahmen zur Verbesserung des Allgemeinzustandes des Patienten den differenzierten Einsatz von Azulfidin, 5-ASA, Kortikosteroiden, Immunsuppressiva und Metronidazol. Auf die Behandlung der fulminanten Verlaufsformen wird gesondert eingegangen. Die Hypothesen zum malignen Entartungsrisiko der entzündlichen Darmerkrankungen finden ausführliche Darstellung, zudem werden extraintestinale Komplikationen (periphere Arthritiden, M. Bechterew, dermatologische und ophthalmologische Begleiterkrankungen, primär sklerosierende Cholangitis, Leberschäden) sowie prognostische Faktoren ausführlich behandelt.
