A prospective multicentre external validation study of the Liverpool Peritonsillar abscess Score (LPS) with a no‐examination COVID‐19 modification

Abstract: Peritonsillar abscesses (PTA, also known as quinsies) are a frequently occurring presentation to emergency departments and represent a common reason for referral to an ENT service. Management options include drainage of the abscess and antibiotic therapy. Without intervention, PTA can develop into deep neck space infections (DNSI) which carry significant morbidity and mortality. 1 Patients who undergo drainage of their PTA have been shown to experience quicker resolution of symptoms. 2

“…Modified Liverpool Peritonsillar abscess Score (LPS) (the components are unilateral sore throat, trismus, sex [male], pharyngeal voice change [hot potato voice]) is also one of the useful tools. It demonstrates a high negative predictive value of 99% and high sensitivity of 98% for diagnosing peritonsillar abscess [19] . In our case, she experienced left-sided sore throat, dysphagia, and trismus.…”

She was considered suitable for further examination because her conditions met the ENT UK criteria and her modified LPS was 5 points.…”

“… 30 , 31 The Liverpool Peritonsillar Abscess Score has undergone modification to support the triage of suspected cases without oral examination, thereby limiting clinicians’ risk of exposure. 32 However, adequate access and supply of appropriate PPE, as well as improved patient testing, must be ensured to protect both patients and staff, and to avoid compromising patient care.…”
