In this study, we proposed a method to improve the safety level of control software (CSW) by managing the CSW’s design information and safety analysis results, and combining failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and fault tree analysis (FTA). Here, the CSW is developed using structured analysis and design methodology. In the upper stage of the CSW’s development process, as the input of the preliminary design information (data flow diagrams (DFDs) and control flow diagrams (CFDs)), the causes of undesirable events of the CSW are clarified by FMEA, and the countermeasures are reflected in the preliminary design information. In the lower stage of the CSW’s development process, as the inputs of the detailed design information (DFDs and CFDs in the lower level) and programs, the causes of the specific undesirable event are clarified by FTA, and the countermeasures are reflected in the detailed design specifications and programs. The processes are repeated until the impact of undesirable events become the acceptable safety level. By applying the proposed method to the CSW installed into a communication control equipment on the space system, we clarified several undesirable events and adopted adequate countermeasures. Consequently, a safer CSW is developed by applying the proposed method.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is seen as the most viable solution for real-time monitoring applications. But the faults occurring at the perception layer are prone to misleading the data driven system and consume higher bandwidth and power. Thus, the goal of this effort is to provide an edge deployable sensor-fault detection and identification algorithm to reduce the detection, identification, and repair time, save network bandwidth and decrease the computational stress over the Cloud. Towards this, an integrated algorithm is formulated to detect fault at source and to identify the root cause element(s), based on Random Forest (RF) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). The RF classifier is employed to detect the fault, while the FTA is utilized to identify the source. A Methane (CH4) sensing application is used as a case-study to test the proposed system in practice. We used data from a healthy CH4 sensing node, which was injected with different forms of faults, such as sensor module faults, processor module faults and communication module faults, to assess the proposed model’s performance. The proposed integrated algorithm provides better algorithm-complexity, execution time and accuracy when compared to FTA or standalone classifiers such as RF, Support Vector Machine (SVM) or K-nearest Neighbor (KNN). Metrics such as Accuracy, True Positive Rate (TPR), Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC), False Negative Rate (FNR), Precision and F1-score are used to rank the proposed methodology. From the field experiment, RF produced 97.27% accuracy and outperformed both SVM and KNN. Also, the suggested integrated methodology’s experimental findings demonstrated a 27.73% reduced execution time with correct fault-source and less computational resource, compared to traditional FTA-detection methodology.

The vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) topology will change the mobility of the nodes and the data delivery will be efficient in the vehicle environment. This technique uses the density, mobility, dissemination in the requirements of emergency message broadcasting. The emergency message is broadcast on the road causes many issues like reliability, latency and scalability.Beacons are used in the VANET to broadcast messages and get the information from neighbours.When more vehicles transmit the messages in equal time lead a frequent broadcast storm the vehicles are faced the message delivery failure. Adaptive Scheduled Partitioning and Broadcasting technique (ASPBT) is used in our paper for message reliability, and the transmission efficiency will adjust the partitions and beacon automatically for reducing retransmissions. The partition size is determined using the density of network transmission of each partition schedule is estimated using the Black Widow Optimization (BWOA). The emergency message gets low delay and redundancy of the message is reducing, ASPBT include the forwarding of novel with the selection of optimal partition. The performance analysis is done with the existing methods for the determination of efficiency, redundancy, collision, and delay.The efficiency of proposed technique as 98% comparing with existing broadcast schemes of VANET.
