A proposal for basic management of HIV disease in West Africa: use of clinical staging and haemogram data

Abstract: Our objective was to propose a strategy to screen HIV-infected African people for biological immunodeficiency easily. In a cross-sectional study, we analysed the patterns of diseases and of CD4 counts among 266 HIV-infected adults. Peripheral facial paralysis and chronic cutaneo-mucous diseases were the earlier B-stage diseases. Pulmonary tuberculosis was close to B-stage diseases, and chronic diarrhoea was borderline between B and C stages. Cachexia was the most frequent C-stage symptom (47.8%). Ninety per ce… Show more

“…In this study, we used haemoglobin as measure of anaemia. Haemoglobin measurement plays an important role in the basic management of HIV disease in West Africa [ 39 ] and could be measured easily where resources for more sophisticated laboratory markers are not available. For better monitoring and intervention, regular measurements could be of great help.…”

“…Moore et al, (1998) found that treatment of anaemia with erythropoietin was associated with an improved prognosis possibly by allowing higher doses or prolonged use of drugs such as zidovudine and ganciclovir. In a recent cross-sectional study, haemoglobin measurement was shown to play an important role in the basic management of HIV disease in West Africa [41]. …”
