INTRODUCTION This study aimed to assess the availability of retailer storefronts that continued to sell electronic nicotine/non-nicotine delivery systems (ENDS/ENNDS) in India, and characterise such retailers following the promulgation of 2019 Indian Ordinance and Act (Ordinance/Act) that prohibit ENDS/ENNDS nationwide. METHODS Discreet observations were conducted of retailer storefronts across different socioeconomic zones in nine major cities of India (Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Delhi, Indore, Kolkata, Ludhiana, Raipur, and Ranchi) from 28 November 2019 to 22 January 2020 to identify the availability of ENDS/ENNDS (i.e. electronic cigarettes, e-cigarette liquid, e-cigarette accessories, heated tobacco products (HTPs), and HTPs accessories). We report the number and proportion (%) of retailers that sold ENDS/ENNDS. Other characteristics of the retailers are also described, including indirect evaluation of the retailer’s awareness of the Ordinance/Act. RESULTS Of the 199 retailer storefronts visited, 37 (18.6%) sold ENDS/ENNDS and, therefore, did not comply with the Ordinance/Act. The highest availability of non-compliant retailers was in Kolkata (n=26; 83.9%). The majority of the non-compliant retailers were tobacco retailers (n=35; 94.6%), sold e-cigarettes (n=22; 59.5%), and e-cigarette accessories (n=24; 64.9%). Although many of the non-compliant retailers displayed their ENDS/ENNDS products (n=33; 89.2%) and did not feature health warnings related to ENDS/ENNDS (n=32; 86.5%) in the stores, nearly 90% (n=33) were aware of the Ordinance/Act. CONCLUSIONS Despite a nationwide ban, ENDS/ENNDS are still available in major cities in India, and concentrated in a particular city. Indian authorities should focus on law enforcement to ensure that the prohibition is effectively implemented.

O tabagismo foi incentivado e visto como símbolo de beleza por muito tempo até ser evidenciado seu forte impacto negativo na saúde humana, infelizmente com o surgimento de novos dispositivos para fumar como o cigarro eletrônico tem se visto com preocupação o que se pode referir como um novo modo de tabagismo. Assim o presente artigo tem o objetivo de evidenciar o uso do cigarro eletrônico e causas potenciais a saúde, identificando os danos causados pelo cigarro eletrônico ao usuário e consequentemente seu impacto na saúde pública. Trata-se o de um estudo de revisão narrativa da literatura, com abordagem qualitativa. O uso dos dispositivos eletrônicos torna-se um possível perpetuador do ato de fumar podendo representar iniciação e até mesmo a permanência no tabagismo. Já existem prejuízos relacionados ao uso dos cigarros eletrônicos (CE), eles provocam toxidade para o organismo, também pode causar dependência e provocar doenças nos sistemas pulmonar, cardiovascular e gastrointestinal, causando desequilíbrio no corpo humano, o uso do CE também está relacionado a problemas na saúde mental como, irritação. Fica claro que o uso do cigarro eletrônico promove prejuízos tanto para o usuário quando para a saúde pública, sendo necessário cada vez mais normas que fiscalizem a disseminação de propagandas e comercialização do produto. Assim sugere-se que novas pesquisas sejam realizadas afim que corroborar evidências dos malefícios do uso do CE, afim de entender seus diferentes aspectos e traçar estratégias para a diminuição de seus efeitos, visando a melhoria da saúde de toda a comunidade.

Objective: to report a case of periductal mastitis, whose initial presentation has been necrosis of nipple in a client of the Public Unified Health System (SUS) in the city of Magé / Rio de Janeiro. The public healthcare system client had reported prolonged use of cheap cigarettes which she used to smoke and which she could afford. Method: case report qualitative study, anchored in anamnesis and physical examination with emphasis on patient social history and pathophisiology of benign breast mastitis related to tobacco use. Result: According to anamnesis and physical examination, it is suggested that a chronic inflammatory process in breast ducts had occurred. A chronic breast inflammatory process may be linked with toxins eliminated in cigarette combustion, nevertheless an overwhelming patient social vulnerability and issues concerning self-care must be regarded by primary health care nursery. Conclusion: Quitting smoking may imply multifactorial aspects, including willpower, psychiatric and somatic disorders, poverty and little access to healthcare system in Brazil. Body care should have been emphasized concerning medical and nursing management. In Magé, mastitis diagnosis associated with tobacco use has been somewhat frequent, and recurrent non-puerperal breast abscess complicates most cases. Often, poor female patients with low self steem have consumed cheaper cigarettes, perhaps less subject to appropriate quality control.
