A programme evaluation of theFamilyCrisisInterventionProgram (FCIP): relating programme characteristics to change

Abstract: This study evaluated the Family Crisis Intervention Program (FCIP), focusing on crisis, child safety, family functioning and child behaviour problems. Questionnaires were completed by 183 families in crisis and their FCIP worker. After FCIP, the crisis had decreased and child safety had increased. Although problematic family functioning persisted after intervention, improvements were found in parent–child interaction, parenting stress, parental competence and child behaviour problems. Crisis change, safety cha… Show more

“…In social work, a good relationship between practitioners and service users is of paramount importance for achieving the intervention goals (Ruch et al, 2010). Extensive research suggests that service users' motivations and outcomes of social work interventions are largely determined by the quality of the practitioner-client relationship, which is also referred to as working alliance (Al et al, 2014;Buckley et al, 2011). However, in child welfare services, establishing a positive relationship is often challenging due the mandatory nature of the intervention (Ferguson et al, 2021) and the power asymmetries in the practitioner-client relationship (Dumbrill, 2006).…”

“…Given carers wanted educational programs, it may be useful for carer organisations to investigate programs that have been implemented in other countries to develop a program in Australia. Some studies from the United States and the United Kindom provide evidence about education programs that have been shown to be helpful (i.e., Wolthaus et al, 2002;Roick et al, 2006;Al et al, 2014;Yesufu-Udechuku et al, 2015), but such programs play only a minor role in Australia. Brief psycho-educational support programs can improve carers' knowledge and attitudes, but only long-term psycho-educational interventions (greater than eight weeks) improve coping strategies (Roick et al, 2006).…”

“…Education programs that include counselling are more effective because carers find it helpful to discuss difficulties they have when helping the patient (Szmukler, Herrman, Bloch, Colusa, & Benson, 1996). Crisis education programs for parents and their children have been shown to decrease the severity of crises symptoms, improve child safety, decrease the level of parent stress, and increase parents' confidence in managing crises (Al et al, 2014). In the current sample, over half of carers were parents, suggesting that the introduction of a parent-child education program might be useful.…”

“…Therefore, there is little evidence concerning this topic, but the available results are suggestive. The global level of family risk established by practitioners is related to the level of risk found using standardized protocols of risk factors and stressful life events reported by parents (English & Graham, 2000; McCrae & Barth, 2008; Rodríguez, Camacho, Rodrigo, Martín, & Máiquez, 2006), to psychosocial indicators assessed with standardized tools and with parents or children as informants (Al, Stams, Asscher, & Van der Laan, 2014), and to the family’s socio-economic status (Rodríguez et al., 2006). Professionals’ viewpoint also tends to coincide with that of child welfare researchers on the main indicators that must be included in family risk-assessment instruments (Ryan, Wiles, Cash, & Siebert, 2005), and data reported by practitioners are related to the degree of family improvement in adequately providing for the child (Wells & Correia, 2011).…”
