Purpose This paper aims to explore the comparative analysis of marketing strategies between seaports and dry ports. Second, this paper proposes a recommendation to improve marketing approaches in both nodes.Design/methodology/approach This research analyzes current marketing approaches to improve the freight volume and enhance interrelation between them for a comprehensive collaboration in the freight supply chain. This research employed semi-structured interviews via an e-interview questionnaire.Findings The result shows that dry port and seaport practices a mixed marketing strategy. Some marketing elements that seaport applies are also applied by dry port, like focusing on the target customer, joining exhibitions and face-to-face meetings. Customized service to clients, frequent discussion on the effective marketing plans, increasing the facilities at the seaport and dry ports can improve the marketing strategies in dry port and seaports.Originality/value Seaports are the critical components in esteem-driven context, which add to supply chains by creating value-added services in the transport chain. Nonetheless, research between dry ports and seaports has increasingly drawn the attention of scholars during the last decade. Having said like that, there have not been any pragmatic studies undertaken in the Malaysian context that mainly discussing the marketing prospect of the dry ports and seaports especially during COVID-19 outbreak.

Among the seaports in the Bay of Bengal, Chittagong port is in a lucrative position to cover the maximum spatial transportation in Asia. Probably, China-proposed Maritime Silk Road (MSR) under the banner of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) had overlooked Chittagong port as maritime load centre in the South Asian region due to geopolitical issue. A recent performance of Chittagong port in terms of container throughput and considering the hinterland potentiality by MSR, Chittagong port is visualized load centre or connector in the region attractively. The intermodal freight transportation system brought the new dimension in the port regionalization. Driven in particular, Chittagong port’s geographical position and performance are two important indicators in serving through the intermodal system to the region timely and economically. The main objective of port development in Bangladesh is to act as maritime load centre of MSR and offer port services not only for Bangladesh but also to provide maritime transport facilities as well as seaport access to the landlocked countries Nepal and Bhutan, naturally locked part of India, southwest part of China and neighbouring country Myanmar for regional development. In addition to the literature review, this research used a qualitative research method with the combination of primary and secondary data collected from the field. Moreover, one network model is designed on how Chittagong port will provide the hinterland services to the region and implement the dictum of MSR and BRI. Overall, this paper aims to investigate the potentiality of Chittagong port to serve as a regional maritime load centre of MSR for developing an integrated intermodal freight transportation system in Asia.

Use of DELPHI-AHP Method to Identify annd Analyze Risks in Seaport Dry Port System

The dry port concept has recently gained rising consideration in the multimodal transport context from the point of view both of researchers and stakeholders related to the benefits of the seaport dry port system. Given the relevance of the topic, the present paper aims to identify the potential risk factors of the three major parts that constitute the seaport dry port system and present a conceptual framework to facilitate risk factors analysis. Based on a three-step approach, starting with a systematic literature review, which resulted in 204 collected and examined papers, which allowed identifying 181 potential risk factors with an average of 60 risk factors in each major part of the studied system. In addition, we used a survey based on the Delphi technique to ensure a good extraction of data from 12 selected experts related to the seaport dry port system; then, we used the MCDM (Multiple-Criteria Decision-Making) method AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) in order to: 1) present a hierarchy that simplifies the complexity of the studied system in an organized structure; 2) analyze and assess risk factors based on the identified criteria. A case study involving the Moroccan seaport dry port system of Casablanca illustrates that the seaport part is critical and any major risk factor in this part can even paralyze the operations of the whole system, especially if that risk factor belongs to the human factors category or economic risk category, which is also considered in the study as a critical category.
