A Principled Method for Exploiting Opening Books

Abstract: Abstract. We used in the past a lot of computational power and human expertise for having a very big dataset of good 9x9 Go games, in order to build an opening book. We improved a lot the algorithm used for generating these games. Unfortunately, the results were not very robust, as (i) opening books are definitely not transitive, making the non-regression testing extremely difficult and (ii) different time settings lead to opposite conclusions, because a good opening for a game with 10s per move on a single co… Show more

“…Opening books, discussed e.g. by Gaudel et al (2010), are another example of a universally strong enhancement, but they are not always available. MCTS with opening books can be considered a meta-approach, because the first actions are chosen from the opening book and when, at some point in the game, the available actions are not present in the opening book, the remaining ones are chosen according to the MCTS algorithm.…”

“…The so‐called Opening Book [21–25] is a special form of database in which the draughts classic and mature moves' information are organised. In the start‐stage, the system selects the more favourable move by calling the information in the Opening Book and cooperating with the traditional search and valuation system.…”
