Procrastination is a pervasive self-regulatory failure affecting approximately one-fifth of the adult population and half of the student population. It is defined as one's voluntarily delay of an intended course of action despite being worse off as a result of that delay. Procrastination has a negative impact on performance and is associated with poorer mental health. Stress, worry, and feelings of guilt are common among those who procrastinate recurrently. In addition, procrastination is associated with fewer mental health-seeking behaviors and increased treatment delay, leading to greater distress and the exacerbation of illness. The current paper seeks to provide a theoretical and clinical understanding of procrastination by reviewing prior research. Procrastination can be understood using different motivational theories, learning theory, self-efficacy theory, as well as biases and heuristics. Temporal motivational theory is proposed as an integrated explanation for procrastination, consisting of the interaction of four different variables: expectancy, value, impulsiveness, and time, each of which affects the tendency to procrastinate. A general implication is that procrastination should be regarded as an idiosyncratic behavioral problem that requires a cognitive case conceptualization or a functional analysis in order to guide therapists in their work. A number of treatment interventions might be used in relation to procrastination-for example, efficacy performance spirals, automaticity, stimulus control, stimulus cues, learned industriousness, and cognitive restructuring. Furthermore, the current paper explores the evidence on using cognitive behavior therapy for procrastination, discussing the scarcity of randomized controlled trials and the lack of validated outcome measures, and highlighting the need for further research.

ÖzPsikoloji ve psikiyatride birçok yaklaşım, davranışları etiyolojik açıdan açıklama gayreti sergiler. Radikal davranışçı geleneği izleyen işlevsel bağlamsalcılık ve uygulama yöntemi olan davranışın işlevsel analizi ise ana akım yaklaşımlara bir alternatif olarak ele alınabilir. İşlevsel analiz, belirli bir davranışın analizinde, o davranışın bizzat içinde bulunduğu bağlamı dikkate alır ve öğrenme ilkeleri doğrultusunda davranış üzerinde etkili olan bağlamsal faktörlere odaklanılmasını önerir. Bu faktörler, bir davranışın meydana geldiği çevre, içsel/dışsal uyaranlar ve davranışın yol açtığı sonuçlardır. Bu derlemede, davranışın anlaşılmasında görünüme odaklanan topoğrafik analizin ardından, davranışın zamanı, süresi, sıklığı, yoğunluğu ve gerekenden eksik mi aşırı mı olduğunu inceleyen yapısal analize değinilecek, bunların işlevsel analizle var olan farkları tartışılacaktır. Daha sonra, davranışın işlevsel analizinin dayandığı öğrenme ilkeleri olan alışma, tepkisel koşullanma, edimsel koşullanma, sosyal öğrenme ve türetilmiş ilişkisel yanıtlama kısaca vurgulanacaktır. Ardından, davranışın işlevsel analizi ve klinik kullanımına dair örneklere odaklanılacaktır. Bu üç analiz birlikte ele alındığında -hangi kuramsal yaklaşıma bağlı olunursa olunsun-klinik uygulama ve araştırma süreçlerinde objektif ve kullanışlı bir çalışma zemini oluşturulabilir.Anahtar Kelimeler: Davranışsal analiz, işlevsel bağlamsalcılık, davranışçılık Abstract Functional Analysis of Behavior and Its Clinical ApplicationMany approaches to psychology and psychiatry have tried to explain behaviors etiologically. Functional contextualism, followed by radical behaviorism, and functional analysis of behavior as its application method can be considered as an alternative to mainstream approaches. In analyzing a particular behavior, functional analysis takes into account the context in which behavior presents itself, and suggests to focus on contextual factors that influence behavior in the direction of learning principles. These factors are: environment in which a particular behavior occurs, internal/external stimuli, and consequences of that behavior. In this review, we will first explain the topographic analysis that focuses on the shape and features of behavior, and the structural analysis that reveals the time, duration, frequency, intensity, deficit or excess, and will discuss the existing differences between these and functional analysis. Then, the functional analysis that depends on the learning principles of habituation, respondent conditioning, operant conditioning, social learning, and derived relational response will be briefly explained. And after, we will focus on functional analysis of behavior and its clinical examples. Taken together, these three analyzes can create an objective and useful background in clinical practice and research processes -independent of theoretical approaches.

Vorgestellt wird das Konzept der kritischen Funktionalität, das aus der funktionalen Verhaltensanalyse abgeleitet wird. Es bildet ein Phänomen des klinischen Alltags ab, bei dem die Symptomatik trotz bewältigungsorientierter Interventionen nicht ausreichend reduziert werden kann, weil andere psychische Prozesse dies zu verhindern scheinen. Für das Konzept der kritischen Funktionalität werden Klaus Grawes Überlegungen einer «allgemeinen Psychotherapie» genutzt, um die Thesen zu spezifizieren und entsprechende Behandlungsimplikationen abzuleiten. Im Anschluss wird ein Vorgehen in vier Phasen zur therapeutischen Bearbeitung der kritischen Funktionalität vorgeschlagen.
