A preliminary study on the quality and safety of milk in donkeys positive for Toxoplasma gondii

Abstract: Toxoplasmosis is one of the five parasitic diseases considered as a priority for public health action. The consumption of raw milk products represents a possible risk, in particular for certain categories of people. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible effects of Toxoplasma gondii on milk yield and quality in sero-positive animals with parasitemia. Eighteen healthy lactating Amiata jennies, between 90 and 180 days were included in the study. Four donkeys scored positive for immunofluorescent anti… Show more

“…Researchers in Egypt were able to detect the antibodies against T. gondii in 46.30% of donkey milk samples (Haridy, Saleh, Khalil, & Morsy, ). Italian investigations reported the detection of T. gondii DNA in 66.66% (Mancianti et al, ) and 22.22% (Martini et al, ) of analyzed donkey milk samples which were supported our findings.…”

“…Scientists in Egypt were able to detect the toxoplasmic antibodies in 46.3% of milk samples (Haridy et al, 2010 ). In Europe, Italian studies using molecular tools reported the detection of T. gondii DNA in 66.66% (Mancianti et al, 2014 ) and in 22.22% (Martini et al, 2014 ) of analyzed donkeys' milk samples.…”
