Surface sediment samples from three water reservoirs of Slovakia were analyzed for selected organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). Concentrations of total dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (ΣDDTs) in the sediments from Velke Kozmalovce, Ruzin, and Zemplinska Sirava ranged from 12 to 24 ng g -1 , 5 to 28 ng g -1 , and 1 to 20 ng g -1 , respectively, with the exception of one sediment sample from Zemplinska Sirava, having anomalously high concentration of ΣDDTs (526 ng g -1 ). Concentrations of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in the sediments from these water reservoirs were generally lower and ranged from 0.3 to 9 ng g -1 . Other organochlorine pesticides such as mirex, lindane and heptachlor were not detected in the surface sediments. Ratios of DDT/(DDE + DDD) were lower than 1.0 in majority of the sediment samples indicating that the degradation of the parent DDT occurred significantly and DDT in the sediments from the studied water reservoirs was derived mainly from the weathered agricultural soils. Moreover, ratios of DDD/DDE indicated that the parent DDT was degraded under aerobic conditions before depositing into the sediments of these water reservoirs. . Vo väčšine vzoriek sedimentov boli hodnoty pomeru DDT/(DDE + DDD) nižšie ako 1, z čoho sa dá usúdiť, že väčšia časť pôvodne prítomného DDT sa rozložila na jeho hlavné metabolity a že DDT v sedimentoch vodných nádrží pochádza najmä z erodovaných poľnohospodárskych pôd. Hodnoty pomeru DDD/DDE ukázali, že predtým ako bol DDT deponovaný do sedimentov vodných nádrží, rozkladal sa najmä za aeróbnych podmienok.KĽÚČOVÉ SLOVÁ: organochlórované pesticídy, DDT, dnové sedimenty, vodná nádrž, organická hmota.

Abstract. The Ojców National Park is situated in southern Poland in an area of Jurassic limestone, which determines the hydrochemistry of the water in the River Pr dnik. The geochemical index of the sediment in the River Pr dnik indicated it is moderately polluted with Pb and Zn, and heavily polluted with Cd compared to unpolluted sediment. The effect of natural and anthropogenic sources on the sediment in the River Pr dnik and in appearing of structural and functional alterations in the salivary gland chromosomes of two species of Chironomidae, Micropsectra pallidula and Polypedilum convictum, was investigated. Two types of chromosomal rearrangements (inherited and somatic) were identified in the species studied. Inherited heterozygous inversions occurred at a higher frequency (between 5.55%-57.81%) and may have local adaptive value. In M. pallidula a karyotype divergence consisting of fixed chromosome inversions on arms B and E was recorded. As somatic chromosome rearrangements can be caused by stress agents, we suggest that the somatic aberrations in both of the species studied indicate the existence of pollution, i.e. induced stress. On the basis of these somatic rearrangements the somatic index of both species was defined: M. pallidula -0.346, P. convictum -0.555. In addition to these rearrangements functional alterations in key structures, Balbiani rings (BRs) and the nucleolar organizer region (NOR) located on chromosome EF, which significantly decreased their transcriptional activity, were recorded in M. pallidula. Changes in the appearance of the telomere region on chromosome G in P. convictum was considered to be a response to the environmental conditions in the River Pr dnik. It was shown that polytene chromosomes are very sensitive to environmental changes and can be used to detect pollutants in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract.To assess the extent of sediment contamination in the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) system after the flood of 1993, sediment samples were collected from 24 of the 26 navigational pools in the river and from one site in the Saint Croix River in the summer of 1994. Whole-sediment tests were conducted with the amphipod Hyalella azteca for 28 days measuring the effects on survival, growth, and sexual maturation. Amphipod survival was significantly reduced in only one sediment (13B) relative to the control and reference sediments. Body length of amphipods was significantly reduced relative to the control and reference sediments in only one sample (26C). Sexual matura tion was not significantly reduced in any treatment when compared to the control and reference sediments. No significant correlations were observed between survival, growth, and maturation to either the physical or chemical characteristics of the sediment samples from the river. When highly reliable effect range medians (ERMs) were used to evaluate sediment chemis try, 47 of 49 (96%) of the samples were correctly classified as nontoxic. These results indicate that sediment samples from the Upper Mississippi River are relatively uncontaminated com pared to other areas of known contamination in the United States.
