A Predictive Nomogram for Recurrence of Carcinoma of the Major Salivary Glands<alt-title>Nomogram for Salivary Gland Carcinoma Recurrence</alt-title>

Abstract: We introduce a clinically useful nomogram that quantifies the risk of recurrence in carcinomas of the major salivary gland. By quantifying risk for an individual patient, this would enable the clinician to give more accurate prognostic information to the patient resulting in better patient counseling.

“…Major salivary gland nomograms for overall survival (10), cancer specific survival (10) and recurrence (11) have recently been published by our institution. A comprehensive list of potential factors, created in consultation with an expert panel and consultation with the literature, were considered as potential covariates and used to collect initial data for the nomogram generation cohort.…”

“…Outside of adenoid cystic cancer, nomograms have been demonstrated in breast and prostate cancer to be superior to conventional staging, scoring systems, and expert opinion [17,18,21,22]. We have also reported the utility of nomograms for management of patients with oral cancer [20] and salivary gland cancer [24,25]. Furthermore, nomograms are arguably most valuable in situations where the potential benefit of added therapy is unclear [22,26,27].…”

“…Morever, several nomograms have been used to assist clinicians in making treatment and follow-up decisions in patients with head and neck cancers, including squamous cell carcinoma [1821], adenoid cystic carcinoma [22] and nasopharyngeal cancer [23]. Two studies have reported the utility of nomograms for predicting the outcomes of patients with MSGC [5, 7], but both were based on a single population retrospective cohort and did not include patients who did not undergo surgery.…”
