A Predictive Handoff Approach for Mobile IP

Abstract: We propose a predictive handoff mechanism which can predict the occurrence of link layer handoff precisely. It can be used as a trigger for Mobile IP to start network layer handoff ahead or pre-allocate resources. Using this approach, link layer of MN(Mobile Node) detects signal strength changes of base stations to calculate the probability of coming handoff and triggers network layer handoff based on mobility model and RFM(Recursive Forgetting Memory linear square). In this paper we illustrate the mechanism o… Show more

“…Based on defining parameters, the prediction model has the following categories: 1) Prediction algorithm based on RSS with threshold. The RSS based handoff prediction algorithm is well known mechanism [7,8]. A terminal periodically measures the RSS from the current base station and compares it with a predefined threshold.…”

“…This approach has attracted several research interests [1], [7], [8], [9]. The handoff integration in Layer 2 and Layer 3 has been proposed in [10]. The authors describe a predictive handoff approach for Mobile IP to support fast or smooth handoff.…”
