A precision fiber Bragg grating interrogation system using long-wavelength vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser

Abstract: This paper presents the development of a cost-effective precision fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogation system using long-wavelength vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). Tuning properties of a long-wavelength VCSEL have been studied experimentally. An approximately quadratic dependence of its wavelength on the injection current has been observed. The overall design and key operations of this system including intensity normalization, peak detection, and quadratic curve fitting are introduced in det… Show more

“…6 Due to its conceptual simplicity, this kind of structure is easy to fabricate and applies to many technological elds, including ber communication systems, optical disk reading, laser printers, and sensing. [7][8][9][10][11] The main drawback of these systems is the need for expensive and time consuming epitaxial manufacturing to obtain high quality VCSELs based on crystalline emitters. 4,12,13 However, in pursuing simplicity and cost reduction, techniques like solution processing or extrusion are attracting increasing interest.…”

“…However, the system is susceptible to the influence of the laser wavelength drift noise, which limits the wavelength demodulation accuracy because the system does not have a standard wavelength reference. [7] proposed a VCSEL-based fiber grating demodulation method using the acetylene absorption peak as the reference wavelength, greatly improving the demodulation accuracy. However, the laser needs an additional temperature control system, increasing power consumption and cost.…”

“…Currently, many researchers have reported wavelength demodulation schemes of fiber Bragg gratings using current-tuned VCSELs. Hu et al [9] introduced a FBG demodulation device and method based on tunable VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) and acetylene absorption peak as a spectral reference. The laser's emission wavelength was maintained between 1527nm and 1530nm using temperature control (TEC) for the laser.…”
