A pragmatics of links

Abstract: This paper applies the linguistic theory of relevance to the study of the way links work, insisting on the lyrical quality of the link-interpreting activity. It is argued that such a pragmatic approach can help us understand hypertext readers´ behavior, and thus be useful for authors and toolbuilders alike.

“…However, because redirective referentiality is an overt feature of hypertext as a text type, even relatively obscure linkings are seen as perfectly acceptable and not as a violation of textual wellformedness. Mindful of this, Susana Pajares Tosca (2000) suggests that, because the strategies adopted in hypertextual linking tend to resemble those found in literary and even poetic texts (such as metaphorical and allusive transitions between text elements), hypertextual linking is most successfully approached by treating texts using it as literary texts right from the start.…”

“…[48,6,27,33] discuss the rhetoric of links and maps and the way they relate to cognitive attitudes. [18] discusses how interface design and navigation options may enhance or diminish immersion and engagement in hyperreading.…”
