“…Enhanced ocean uptake of CO 2 can occur through three main pathways, (a) creating and restoring ‘blue carbon’ biological sinks such as mangrove swamps and other coastal ecosystems such as seagrass beds (technical potential: <1 Gt CO 2 e year −1 ; estimated from Froehlich et al, 2019), (b) ocean fertilization, for example, with iron, to increase surface primary production, which increases the delivery of fixed CO 2 into the deep sea (technical potential: 1–3 Gt CO 2 e year −1 ; Minx et al, 2018; Ryaboshapko & Revokatova, 2015) and (c) increasing the alkalinity of seawater through seeding the ocean with natural or artificial alkaline materials to sequester CO 2 as bicarbonate and carbonate ions (HCO 3 ‐, CO 3 2− ) in the ocean (technical potential: 1–100 Gt CO 2 e year −1 ; Fuss et al, 2018) – similar to enhancing mineral weathering (see Section 2.3.7).
