A portable Video Tool Library for MPEG Reconfigurable Video Coding using LLVM representation

Abstract: International audienceMPEG Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC) represents the last answer of MPEG to overcome the lack of interoperability between codecs deployed in the market nowadays. The main goal of MPEG RVC is to provide a set of coding tools employed in all MPEG standards, the Video Tools Library (VTL), encapsulated into independent entities called Functional Units (FUs). FUs are described as dataflow actors in RVC-CAL actor language (RVC-CAL) and decoders are described as dataflow programs with the Abstr… Show more

“…All the results presented in this section are reproducible by downloading this project and the associated library of coding tools from http://orcc.sf.net. The reader can refer to [21] to find information about this adaptive decoder and to [20] to find information about the actor representation it uses.…”

“…Following the concept of MPEG RVC, the Just-In-Time Adaptive Decoder Engine (JADE) was recently proposed [11]. This decoder is based on the virtual machine provided by the Low-Level Virtual Machine (LLVM) infrastructure to dynamically load and execute dataflow programs.…”

“…Its main innovation lies in the adoption of a data flow programming model. It uses the language RVC-CAL for specifying the FU and the XML Dataflow Format (XDF) [6] [11] for specifying the connection between the FUs. The RVC-CAL language is a textual notation that allows representations of the dataflow, the actors and their functionality.…”

“…To manage the decoder configuration and to achieve platform independence, an LLVM-based tool known as the Just-In-Time Adaptive Decoder Engine (Jade) is chosen [4], [18]. Jade, which may be considered as an RVC-CAL specific virtual machine, operates as an abstract layer to generate an RVC decoder.…”
