A plastic scintillator-based muon tomography system with an integrated muon spectrometer

Abstract: a b s t r a c tA muon scattering tomography system which uses extruded plastic scintillator bars for muon tracking and a dedicated muon spectrometer that measures scattering through steel slabs has been constructed and successfully tested. The atmospheric muon detection efficiency is measured to be 97% per plane on average and the average intrinsic hit resolution is 2.5 mm. In addition to creating a variety of threedimensional images of objects of interest, a quantitative study has been carried out to investig… Show more

“…For example, the Tsinghua University MUon Tomography facilitY (TUMUTY) was built with 6 layers of MRPC detectors and the incoming and outgoing directions of muons are calculated by fitting 3 interacting points of top and bottom detector groups [12]. Some ideas of measuring muon momentum by time-of-flight (TOF) or multiple Coulomb scattering (MCS) in dense detectors were surveyed in literature [15,16].…”

“…Following this approach, several small-scale prototypes have been built over the last years, employing a variety of detection technologies, from gas chambers to segmented strip scintillators, Resistive Plate Chambers and GEM. Several contributions in this field have been reported by various groups [31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39], who have designed small scale as well as large and full-size scale detectors for muon tomography.…”

“…However, it is still challenging to measure muon momentum in the field without resorting to large solenoid or toroidal magnets, Cherenkov ring imagers, or time-of-flight detectors 19 – 21 . Although recent efforts at CNL and INFN aim to infer momentum knowledge from multiple Coulomb scattering measurements 22 , 23 , at present no portable spectrometer exists that can measure muon momentum in the field.…”
