A “place n play” modular pump for portable microfluidic applications

Abstract: This paper presents an easy-to-use, power-free, and modular pump for portable microfluidic applications. The pump module is a degassed particle desorption polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) slab with an integrated mesh-shaped chamber, which can be attached on the outlet port of microfluidic device to absorb the air in the microfluidic system and then to create a negative pressure for driving fluid. Different from the existing monolithic degassed PDMS pumps that are generally restricted to limited pumping capacity and… Show more

“…39 To increase the pumping energy of degassed PDMS, an array of supporting posts was fabricated in each pumping chamber to increase the area for absorbance of air. 40 The PDMS layer and PDMS stamp were fabricated using the soft lithography replica molding technique. Two template molds were fabricated using standard photolithography on 3-in.…”

“…The spotter chip made of PDMS exploits arrays of micro thru-holes combined with discrete dispensing microchannels to easily fabricate user-defined microarrays. In addition, powered by pre-evacuation of its PDMS substrate, 24,25 this spotter chip does not require any external pump, connections, or tubing to dispense or spot probe solutions. Unlike contact and non-contact printing, this spotter system is insensitive to the specific fluid properties, thus reliably producing precise, uniform microarrays.…”
