Introduction Rural workers are exposed to various occupational risks, especially considering the exposure to pesticides. This exposure can lead to respiratory intoxications being the most frequent complaint by these professionals, which could be associated to the lack or improper use of personal protective equipment. Objectives To assess the respiratory function of rural workers exposed to pesticides in the municipality of Quilombo, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Methods This study was quantitative, observational, and descriptive. Our sample consisted of 31 rural workers aged between 25 and 45 years and divided into 2 age groups; we aimed to assess the effect of the period of exposure to pesticides. The participants answered a questionnaire, followed by a respiratory function assessment including measurements of inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength using a manovacuometer, of peak expiratory flow with a peak flow meter, and of tidal volume with a ventilometer. Results The groups presented decreases in respiratory muscle strength, peak expiratory flow, and tidal volume. Conclusions The damage to expiratory function observed in the evaluated sample presents, as a main factor, the lack of personal protective equipment use; therefore, education and health strategies are needed to instrumentalize these workers and reduce the development of occupational risks.

O Objetivo geral estudo foi descrever os distúrbios de saúde e os aspectos relativos ao uso de agrotóxicos por trabalhadores rurais do município de Independência-RS. Para tal, desenvolveu-se uma pesquisa de caráter quantitativo do tipo descritivo exploratória, que foi realizada no município de Independência - Rio Grande do Sul, em uma amostra de 63 agricultores. Os dados foram coletados por meio de um formulário com questões objetivas, no período de novembro de 2019 a fevereiro de 2020. As análises dos resultados basearam-se na análise estatística descritiva. Os agricultores possuem conhecimento dos riscos associados ao uso de agrotóxicos, e já apresentaram distúrbios na saúde associados à exposição a tais produtos como, náusea, diarreia, irritação na pele, ardência nos olhos, porém não tiveram diagnóstico de intoxicação. Os fatores de risco associados a ocorrência de distúrbios na saúde por exposição aos agrotóxicos no município de Independência-RS são a baixa escolaridade, o não uso adequado dos equipamentos de proteção individual, uso de princípios ativos com grau variado de toxicidade, incluindo alguns classificados como cancerígenos, e a inexistência de depósito adequado para armazenamento dos agrotóxicos. Pesquisas como essas podem auxiliar na promoção de saúde dos trabalhadores rurais, prevenindo assim o número de intoxicações e agravos a saúde humana.

Brazil is the largest global consumer of pesticides, resulting in the intoxication of a large number of workers, with high expenditures on health and environmental damage. General objective: to evaluate the effects of the use of pesticides on the health of rural workers working in family farming in terms of intoxication through the evaluation of the erythrocyte and plasma cholinesterase biomarkers. Method: crosssectional, analytical and comparative study between Group (1) of rural workers working in family farming, directly exposed to pesticides and Group (2) of users of Family Health Programs (PSF), in the municipalities of Capitólio and Pimenta -Minas Gerais State (Brazil) -not directly exposed to pesticides, being a control group through the analysis of biomarkers. Results: in this study of 140 participants, the most of them did not report health problems and drug treatment, 6.3% of participants, exposed to pesticides, reported poisoning and 42.5% reported having any signs and/or symptoms of intoxication with predominance for headache. The erythrocyte cholinesterase biomarker showed normality in 63.8% rural workers and 36.2% with alteration in butyrylcholinesterase. Conclusion: butyrylcholinesterase alteration was proven in 36.2% of participants exposed to pesticides and these results correlate with the presence of headache and irritability/nervousness symptoms. There is, therefore, a need for education and training of farmers to limit levels of exposure and harmful health effects to prevent, diagnose and treat possible dysfunctions caused by these chemicals applied to agriculture.
