A Parallel Method to Improve Medical Image Transmission

Abstract: The staggering number of images acquired by modern modalities requires new approaches for medical data transmission. There have been several attempts to improve data transmission time between medical imaging systems. These attempts were mostly based on compression. Although the compression methods can help in many cases, they are sometimes ineffectual in high-speed networks. This paper introduces parallelism to provide an effective method of medical data transmission over both local area network (LAN) and wide… Show more

“…For example, some investigators were able to improve Radiology image transmission time by using parallelism (increased number of parallel network streams) without compression. [ 10 ] It is important to be aware, however, that overwhelming a network with too many streams may cause congestion and therefore actually have a negative effect on throughput achieved. Despite the fact that transferring files from China to our local server delayed the availability of images for consultants to view by up to 24 h, this measure improved the overall turn-around time of digital consultations because pathologists found it easier to work with locally stored WSIs.…”

“…After association, the SCU can request classes of service from the SCP. After sending the service classes, the association is finalized [16]. Despite specifying a communication standard, the DICOM communication protocol is not generic, only being capable of exchanging DICOM messages.…”

“…Para que dispositivos desenvolvidos para obtenção de imagens médicas possam funcionar com outros dispositivos de diferentes fabricantes foi estabelecido esse padrão internacional. Todo fabricante que reivindicar conformidade com a norma deve adotar as recomendações de nidas neste compêndio Pianykh (2008); Maani et al (2012).…”
