A paraesophageal bronchogenic cyst with esophageal communication

Abstract: Paraesophageal bronchogenic cysts are a rare developmental anomaly of the upper digestive tract. Although often asymptomatic, their growth can cause severe symptoms and complications because of the location. The diagnosis is difficult and is mostly by histopathologic findings after extirpation of the cyst. The authors present a case of a paraesophageal bronchogenic cyst, of typical histologic structure (ciliated epithelium and hyaline cartilage) connected with the esophageal lumen by a narrow canal composed of… Show more

“…This finding would be rare, but not unheard of, in cases of this type of cyst. (7) The case reviewed here is of consequence because it demonstrates that bronchogenic cysts may be atypical in location and presentation, and it reinforces the need for surgical intervention, even when there are no symptoms.…”

“…So whether this represents a post-inflammatory change or a congenital communication remained a matter of conjecture. In 1999 when Knezevic J and his colleagues present a case of a well prepared para-esophageal bronchogenic cyst connected with the esophageal lumen by a narrow canal composed of stratifed squamous epithelium [8]. In this patient, the transition of the ciliated epithelium of the cyst into the stratifed squamous epithelium of the cystic canal serves to emphasize the close anatomic and embryologic relationship between esophagus and the bronchial cystic derivatives [8].…”

In this patient, the transition of the ciliated epithelium of the cyst into the stratifed squamous epithelium of the cystic canal serves to emphasize the close anatomic and embryologic relationship between esophagus and the bronchial cystic derivatives [8]. Consider the context of their embryologic development from the foregut, as well as on a histologic basis, the presence of an esophageal communication was thought less remarkable.…”

“…While paraesophageal bronchogenic cysts are uncommon, a paraesophageal bronchogenic cyst that communicates with the oesophagus is rare. Few reports of paraesophageal bronchogenic cysts that communicate with the oesophagus are available in the literature [7,8].…”
