A one‐step preparation of compatibilized polypropylene‐nanocomposites by reactive extrusion processing

Abstract: ABSTRACT:We have developed a one-step method for preparing nanocomposites based on powdered isotactic polypropylene (i-PP) as a matrix polymer (melt-flow index (MFI) = 7.2 g 10 min −1 ), oligo(i-PP-g-MA) (MFI = 35-70 g 10 min −1 ) as a reactive compatibilizer and docecylamine-surface-modified montmorillonite clay (organo-MMT). This method includes grafting maleic anhydride (MA) onto i-PP chains in the melt state under the controlled thermal degradation conditions and intercalative compounding of the obtained o… Show more

“…These hybrids can be used as nanofilms or nanocoatings formed in continuous (flow) regime during surface modification of various thermoplastic films, as reaction-capable compatibilizers, fillers for thermoplastic polymer compositions, especially based on acryl polymers, components of nanomaterials, made via extrusion, masterbatches, etc. [86,195,[198][199][200][201].…”

“…Character of this interaction strongly depends on the nature and functionality of the chosen monomer and polymer chains, which may provide an effective interaction with silicate layers via complex-formation, hydrogen bonding, and amidization/imidization reactions (in the case of primary alkyl amine modified MMT [4]). Effect of H-bonding in ternary solvent/protondonor polymer/proton-acceptor polymer system was also reported by Figueruelo et al [42].…”

“…This considerable scientific and engineering interest has been stimulated by possibility of the significant improvements in physical, mechanical, thermal and other important specific properties of PLS materials. The results of these researches were summarized and discussed in several reviews and articles [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. PLSs are a class of organic-inorganic hybrids, composed of organic polymer matrix in which layered silicate particles of nano-scale dimension are embedded because these nanocomposites show enhanced mechanical properties [8,9], gas barrier properties [10], and improved thermal stability [5,11,12], low flammability [11,12] and protection effects from corrosion [13,14].…”

“…However, this could affect inversely the miscibility between the high-molecular weight matrix PP and the compatibilizer. Depending on a nanoscale dispersion of the layered silicate, the whole spectrum of structures, ranging from intercalated to exfoliated PP nanocomposites, have been observed by WAXD, SAX (see, for instance, Figure 4) and TEM [166,[169][170][171][172]. It is well known that functionalization with mPP could lead to chain scission of the PP, which, in turn, can drastically diminish the mechanical properties of final composite [172].…”
