A numerical study of the heat transfer and fluid flow of micro-channeled water block for computer CPU cooling

Abstract: Thermal and fluid flow characteristics of a micro-channeled water-block with pass variations in 8 samples were studied. The results of a numerical analysis using ANSYS CFX-11 were compared with the results of experiments. The numerical analysis and experiments were conducted under an input power of 150 W, inlet temperature of 35℃ and mass flow rates of 0.7 ~ 2.0 kg/min. The numerical results showed reasonably good agreement, within 3-5%, with the experimental results. Also, the numerical results showed that 2-… Show more

“…There are lots of turbulence models to simulate the turbulent flow and Standart k-ε model is one of them which is widely used for the heat transfer and fluid flow analysis (Choi et al, 2011). Due to this reason, Standart k-ε turbulence model was used in this study.…”

“…A suitable heat exchanger for this purpose was micro-channeled water blocks for computer CPU cooling. They are small and can take heat loads of around 150 W [21]. The model selected for this study is Bykski Water Cooling CPU-XPR-A CPU Block from a Chinese manufacturer.…”

“…On the other phase of the block, micro channels are cut into aluminum and the water entering the heat exchanger is forced to pass through these channels before exiting the heat exchanger. Tae et al in their study elaborated about the flow characters and heat transfer in a similar micro-channeled heat exchanger [21]. Figure 7 represents the heat exchanger.…”

“…Trapezoidal grooved microchannel heatsinks (MCHSs) have the optimum thermal design compared to rectangular and triangular grooved MCHSs. Choi et al [11] conducted numerical analysis on microchannel water blocks with pass variations. The heat transfer rate accompanied by higher values of pressure drop were observed in two-pass samples.…”
