In this study, the new method has been suggested for the synthesis of a binary molten salt eutectic adding nanoparticles (i.e. molten salt nanofluids). Solar salt (i.e. NaNO 3 -KNO 3 , 60:40 by weight) adding 10nm of SiO 2 nanoparticles was prepared to measure the specific heat capacity of molten salt nanofluids by a modulated differential scanning calorimeter (MDSC). In previous studies the sample preparation of a molten salt eutectic follows the same procedure. Each chemical of a molten salt eutectic and nanoparticles is dissolved in an aqueous solution. These homogeneous salts are completely mixed by a sonication. Nano-mixtures are scrapped off the bottom surface of a vial after drying. However, there are complex steps in the process of getting fresh molten salt eutectic nanofluids before MDSC measurements. An unexpected result is able to occur due to phase change (i.e. solid-liquid-solid) at each step and then it has an affect on the specific heat capacity of molten salt nanofluids. A suggested novel method (i.e. Liquid-to-Liquid) can not only prevent unexpected errors (e.g. the possibility of contamination) by phase change in the sample preparation, but also enhance the specific heat capacity of molten salt nanofluids.

Summary The optimization of the total annual cost in heat exchanger networks has been one of the overarching goals when synthesizing these networks. Several methodologies and techniques have been developed to achieve optimal costs in mixed material heat exchanger networks. This paper demonstrates the application of two decomposition methodologies (total decomposition and partial decomposition) for typical cost rules. The objective function was defined as the optimization and minimization of the total annual cost in mixed materials heat exchanger network. Three optimization algorithms, hybrid genetic‐particle swarm optimization (GA‐PSO), shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA) techniques, and ant colony optimization (ACO), were used to further optimize the total cost in mixed materials heat exchanger network. The results indicate that the total annual cost in partial decomposition method was smaller than that in full integration method and total decomposition method. The reduction of the total annual cost was about 27% for GA‐PSO algorithm, 24% for SFLA and 10% for ACO relative to the results reported in this work. In partial decomposition method, at least one mixed material of heat exchanger was used to reduce the hot and cold utility for decreasing the total annual cost. Partial decomposition method resulted in the highest reduction of the total annual cost compared with other methods. Percentage of difference of the total annual cost were 0.36%, 1.92%, and 5.05% for full integration, total decomposition, and partial decomposition methods, respectively, in comparison with the previous studies. Results have been compared with the results of other studies to demonstrate the accuracy of the applied algorithms.

Nature-Inspired Optimization Algorithms for the 3D Reconstruction of Porous Media

One of the most challenging problems that are still open in the field of materials science is the 3D reconstruction of porous media using information from a single 2D thin image of the original material. Such a reconstruction is only feasible subject to some important assumptions that need to be made as far as the statistical properties of the material are concerned. In this study, the aforementioned problem is investigated as an explicitly formulated optimization problem, with the phase of each porous material point being decided such that the resulting 3D material model shows the same statistical properties as its corresponding 2D version. Based on this problem formulation, herein for the first time, several traditional (genetic algorithms—GAs, particle swarm optimization—PSO, differential evolution—DE), as well as recently proposed (firefly algorithm—FA, artificial bee colony—ABC, gravitational search algorithm—GSA) nature-inspired optimization algorithms were applied to solve the 3D reconstruction problem. These algorithms utilized a newly proposed data representation scheme that decreased the number of unknowns searched by the optimization process. The advantages of addressing the 3D reconstruction of porous media through the application of a parallel heuristic optimization algorithm were clearly defined, while appropriate experiments demonstrating the greater performance of the GA algorithm in almost all the cases by a factor between 5%–84% (porosity accuracy) and 3%–15% (auto-correlation function accuracy) over the PSO, DE, FA, ABC, and GSA algorithms were undertaken. Moreover, this study revealed that statistical functions of a high order need to be incorporated into the reconstruction procedure to increase the reconstruction accuracy.
