A novel tuned liquid wall damper for multi-hazard mitigation

Abstract: A structural system consists of gravity and lateral load resisting components. Structural walls in the gravity system are typically designed to resist vertical loads only, and are assumed to be inactive to mitigate lateral loads. In this paper, we propose a novel multifunctional wall system, which is embedded with multiplecapillaries containing free-flowing fluids and can act as both a load carrying member and a Tuned Liquid Wall Damper (TLWD). Functioning similarly to a Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD), the … Show more

“…Each specimen consisted of a F I G U R E 1 Tuned liquid wall damper. 10 1524 mm (5 ft) tall, 610 mm (2 ft) wide, and 102 mm (4 in) thick reinforced concrete wall. These dimensions are proportional to that of a typical structure wall due to laboratory space and loading limitations.…”

“…Min et al [19] proposed a multi-cell re-tuning passive TLCD, in which the two vertical columns are subdivided into a number of smaller cells that can be sealed or opened to adjust the damper's frequency of free vibration after installation. Recently, the authors introduced the concept of tuned liquid wall damper (TLWD) [20], which is a small multi-capillary TLCD encased in concrete walls.…”

“…Rozas et al [18] modeled bidirectional TLCDs through the assumption that both DOFs in the orthogonal directions were uncoupled. Min et al [19] and Wu et al [20] modeled TLMCDs by transforming the TLMCD into an equivalent TLCD of the same frequency of free vibration. However, this approximation method introduces unnecessary constraints on the liquid motion by presuming a relationship between liquid surface displacements in different columns.…”

“…Este es un tipo de amortiguador en el cual las masas son sustituidas por líquido, normalmente agua, permitiendo que el sistema pueda ser utilizado como sistema alternativo de protección contra incendios o de abastecimiento de agua en un determinado momento. Dentro de este tipo de absorbedor, se pueden encontrar variedad de soluciones para los recipientes del agua, como tanques o tubos comunicados [89,90,91,92,93,83,94].…”
