A novel thin film polarizer from photocurable non-aqueous lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal solutions

Abstract: We report a novel thin film polarizer fabricated from a photocurable lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal (LCLC) solution. An organicbased photocurable solution having a lyotropic liquid crystalline phase was prepared by dissolving 25-35 wt% of basic chromonic dye in an acidic monomer (acrylic acid) solution. The shear-coated film after UV irradiation exhibited the maximum polarization efficiency, P ¼ 95.2%. Compared to the conventional aqueous-based technique, the new method provided many advantages such as out… Show more

“…Thus, developing an anchoring surface with high anchoring energy is essential to aligning lyotropic LCs via a surface‐anchoring approach. This can lead to various applications such as polarizing sheets, water‐based organic electronics, and biosensors . To investigate the aligning behavior of the lyotropic LCs on the BP surface, SSY was dissolved in water to a concentration of 35 wt% to prepare the nematic phase.…”

“…2(c). The DOP can be calculated from the following equation; DOP = (T 0  − T 90 )/(T 0  + T 90 )293940. Here, T 0 and T 90 mean the transmittances when the azimuthal angles are 0° and 90° to the polarization axis of the UV-vis polarizer, respectively.…”

“…Recently, our research group successfully fabricated the coatable thin film polarizer by the polymer-stabilization of macroscopically oriented lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal (LCLC)28293031. The LCLC-based coatable polarizers stabilized by the photopolymerization of LCLC monomers exhibit high polarizabilities as well as excellent chemical and mechanical resistances.…”

“…It is also possible to photopattern the color filter and polarizer by using selective photo irradiation through a photomask, which is required for the realization of 3D displays. Compared to previously reported polymerized thin films, 11,15 the new method provides a mono domain thin film. Hence the incident light does not scatter.…”
