A novel source of cytoplasmic male sterility in Calibrachoa pubescens

Abstract: Calibrachoa pubescens is a species native from the south of Brazil, Uruguay and northeast Argentina. An accession identified as 7.3.1.1 was collected at San Martín Department in Corrientes Province, Argentina and is included in the calibrachoa breeding program at the Institute of Floriculture, INTA. This accession is male sterile and produces male-sterile progeny, characterized by the lack of pollen production. Male sterility may be controlled by nuclear or cytoplasmic genes with each type presenting a differe… Show more

“…Fluorescein diacetate accumulates inside the cytoplasm of viable pollen grains with intact plasma membranes, upon hydrolysis to fluorescein by intracellular esterases through the fluorochromatic reaction (FCR) (Heslop-Harrison and Heslop-Harrison 1970 ), whereas propidium iodide labels pollen wall following its higher affinity for pectins (Rounds et al 2011 ). The same technique was also used for the assessment of pollen sterility levels (Colombo et al 2017 ). In our study, different approaches for the quantitative evaluation of pollen quality using the FDA/PI labelling were tested.…”

“…Calibrachoa es un género de plantas perteneciente a la familia Solanaceae originario de América del Sur, específicamente de Brasil, Argentina y Uruguay (Tsukamoto et al, 2002), que tiene importancia económica en el mercado mundial de plantas ornamentales por su frecuente uso en canteros y macetas (Colombo et al, 2017) debido a la variedad de colores y a la atractiva forma de sus flores (Milicia et al, 2016).…”

“…CMS/Rf systems have been widely used in plant breeding to increase the efficiency of hybrid production in several crops (Bohra et al, 2016;Kim and Zhang, 2018). In the case of ornamental species CMS is a desirable trait for breeding purposes to produce hybrid seed, to increase flowering duration, to avoid pollen allergens and to control invasiveness (Colombo et al, 2017).…”
