A Novel Slotless Halbach-Array Permanent-Magnet Brushless DC Motor for Spacecraft Applications

Abstract: This paper presents the design and analysis of a novel machine family-the enclosed-rotor Halbach-array permanentmagnet brushless dc motors for spacecraft applications. The initial design, selection of major parameters, and air-gap magnetic flux density are estimated using the analytical model of the machine. The proportion of the Halbach array in the machine is optimized using finite element analysis to obtain a near-trapezoidal flux pattern. The machine is found to provide uniform air-gap flux density along t… Show more

“…These characteristics have led to the wide use of the Halbach array in portable Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) [15], in maglev vibration isolation units (MVIU) [16], and in brushless DC Motors for spacecraft applications [17]. However, its utilization in robotic climbers has not been widely studied to date.…”

“…4 does not use any ferromagnetic core with slots, the machine is free of cogging torque and core losses. In addition, the flux linkage harmonics due to iron stator slots and magnetic saturation are absent [18]- [20].…”

“…In order to increase the power density, many compound-structure PMSMs integrated by two machines have been proposed [25][26][27][28][29], but they are three-phase PM motors, which lack fault-tolerant capability. To combine the advantages of multiphase PM motors and compound-structure PM motors, a novel five-phase dual-rotor PMSM (DRPMSM) is proposed in this paper, which contains two rotors and one stator, as shown in Figure 1.…”
