A novel purine derivative‐based colorimetric chemosensor for sequential detection of copper ion and sulfide anion

Abstract: A purine derivative-based colorimetric chemosensor (PHP) for the detection of Cu 2+ and S 2− is reported. PHP demonstrated a high selectivity and sensitivity for Cu 2+ through color change from colorless to yellow with a detection limit of 74.9 nM. The sensing mechanism of the PHP-Cu complex was confirmed using X-ray crystal structure analysis and density functional theory calculation. Furthermore, the PHP-Cu complex can be used for selective detection of S 2− via competitive complexation of S 2− to Cu 2+ . Fi… Show more

“…[16][17][18] Therefore, copper becomes an environmental pollutant of drinking water due to its extensive use in various industries. 19 The World Health Organization (WHO) has suggested the tolerance limit of Cu 2+ in drinking water should be 2 ppm (B31.5 mM), 20 whereas the US Environmental Protection Agency describes the concentration of Cu 2+ in drinking water should not be more than B20 mM. 21 Therefore, considerable efforts have been made to appraise the Cu 2+ level in cellular and environmental systems.…”

“…[6] Therefore, copper uptake by human body must be in controlled manner, as per the World Health Organization, a normal adult must take 2-3 mg/day of copper for normal and routine body functions. [7] The copper mining and metallurgical industries are contaminating the aquatic environment with copper metal ions along with other heavy metal ions. These heavy metal ions including copper are accumulating in the aquatic organisms which is also produces severe health risks to human health.…”

“…Imidazole and their derivatives, especially 2,4,5-triaryl-1H-imidazoles, are found to act as building blocks for the synthesis of many important drugs, herbicides, anticancer, and fine chemicals [1][2][3][4]. Thus, the synthesis of imidazole derivatives has attracted an immense interest in the field of organic synthesis.…”
