A novel pseudocapacitance mechanism of elm seed-like mesoporous MoO3−x nanosheets as electrodes for supercapacitors

Abstract: Elm seed-like mesoporous MoO3−x nanosheets were synthesised, and possess both redox and intercalation faradic pseudocapacitance mechanisms.

“…43 As reported in literatures, the electrochemical performance of some transition metal oxides can be improved by introducing oxygen deciency and oxygen non-stoichiometry via annealing in inert or hydrogen atmosphere. 20,41,42,45,46 In our study, the generation of Mo IV oxides and Mo V oxides also can be ascribed to the oxygen depletion inside MoO 3 network. In comparison with pristine TNTs, the enhanced capacitive performance of M-TNT is attributed to two major improvements upon incorporating with MoO 3Àx .…”

“…This phenomenon has been previously observed in other reports. 41,42 The peaks at $232.6 eV and $235.7 eV are indexed to 3d5/2 and 3d3/2 of Mo 6+ , respectively. 43,44 Additionally, the Ti 2p3/2 peak at $458.6 eV and the Ti 2p1/2 peak at $464.3 eV correspond to Ti 4+ (Fig.…”

“…The CV curves of rGO/MoO 3‐ x composite film displays four pairs of reversible redox peaks that can be mainly ascribed to redox reactions between various Mo valence states. However, some redox peaks weaken gradually when the scan rates increase from 2 to 100 mV s −1 due to the surface process gets increasingly predominant . Moreover, the oxidation peaks shift to higher potential and the reduction peaks shift oppositely to lower potential gradually because of polarization of the electrode.…”

“…The worldwide search for efficient and cost-effective energy conversion and storage systems has resulted in the investigation of new uses for lesser known materials. Molybdenum trioxide and its sub-stoichiometric form (MoO 3Àx ; 0 < x < 1) is a material with proposed applications in batteries, [1][2][3] electrochemical capacitors, [4][5][6][7][8] sensors, 9,10 catalysis, [11][12][13] photo-catalysis, 14,15 electrochromism and photochromism. [16][17][18] It has also been found to be an effective hole transport layer in semiconductor devices [19][20][21] and a range of photovoltaic cells.…”
