A Novel Model for Evaluating the Flow of Endodontic Materials Using Micro–computed Tomography

Abstract: Although ZOE presented better flow determined by ISO methodology, BIO showed the best filling ability. The model of the technique proposed for evaluating flow using μCT imaging showed proper and reproducible results and could improve flow analysis.

“…For this reason, micro-CT is considered as the gold standard for the filling analysis 21 . Based on this important characteristic to an accurate evaluation, Tanomaru-Filho et al 7 proposed a new technique for assessing flow and filling of root-end filling materials using micro-CT imaging. The authors stated that the test model proposed showed proper and reproducible results and could improve flow analysis.…”

“…Therefore, the flow of endodontic sealers may be evaluated by the ISO 6876/2012 6 standard, which recommend that the materials have a minimum of 17 mm of flow. However, the main limitation of this conventional test is its incapability to evaluate also the filling ability of the materials 7 .…”

“…Numerous studies confirmed its effectiveness as a biocompatible material, inducing the formation of mineralized tissue, besides the antimicrobial activity. These excellent biological properties are attributed to its alkaline pH and calcium ion release capacity, maintaining a high pH [14][15][16]. The hydrophilic nature of the MTA particles allows its use even in the presence of moisture, once the main components are tricalcium and dicalcium silicate, tricalcium aluminate, tricalcium oxide, and radiopacifying agents, such as bismuth oxide [17].…”

“…Rheological properties of TCS-based materials with a potential of use as endodontic repair materials are important clinically since they affect material manipulation, placement, and stability. So far the flowability of hydraulic cements has not been extensively studied [25][26][27]; however, flow properties of TCS-based endodontic sealers are more routinely reported in the literature [18,28,29]. This could be attributed to the lack of a standardised model for flowability tests on hydraulic cements.…”
