A novel hyperbranched polyborazine and its reactive blend with benzoxazine thermosets

Abstract: Boron carbonitride polymers have been arising abiding interest due to their excellent thermal and mechanical properties. In this study, a novel kind of hyperbranched polymer based on boron carbonitride skeleton, polyborazine, has been synthesized by a convenient A 2 þB 3 approach. The chemical structure of polyborazine was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). FT-IR and X-ra… Show more

“…Different from commercially available hyperbranched polyesters such as Boltron™, the HBPs can form a homogeneous phase in a cured crosslinked network and do not obviously compromise other properties such as the glass transition temperature ( T g ), Young's modulus and processability. These results can be related to the unique structure of HBPs: the branched structure, multiple reactive terminal groups and internal cavities . Si et al .…”

“…These results can be related to the unique structure of HBPs: the branched structure, multiple reactive terminal groups and internal cavities. [35][36][37][38][39] Si et al 40 used hyperbranched poly(resorcinol borate) to modify benzoxazine resin and found both the storage modulus and impact strength were increased. Jin et al 41 reported an aliphatic hyperbranched epoxy which can simultaneously improve the storage modulus and toughness of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy.…”

“…Phenolics acted as Lewis acids and catalyzed the ring‐opening polymerization of benzoxazines. Polyborazines introduced as catalysts for the curing reactions of benzoxazines increased thermal stability and oxidation resistance of the matrix polymer . Improvement in processability and thermal properties of benzoxazine resins was obtained upon incorporation of phenyl boronic acid that acted also as a catalyst during the polymerization process .…”

“…Polyborazines introduced as catalysts for the curing reactions of benzoxazines increased thermal stability and oxidation resistance of the matrix polymer. 16 Improvement in processability and thermal properties of benzoxazine resins was obtained upon incorporation of phenyl boronic acid that acted also as a catalyst during the polymerization process. 17 Recently, in our group, polybenzoxazine composites were prepared by curing benzoxazine monomers based on phenol and aniline or p-amino methyl benzoate in the presence of various amounts of benzene diboronic acid.…”

“…[17] Up till now, hyperbranched polyborazine and poly(resorcinol borate) have been successfully applied to modify benzoxazine resins. [18,19] However, most of these studies focused on investigating the influence of hyperbranched polymers on the toughness and thermal stability of benzoxazine resins. The effect of hyperbranched polymers on the flame retardant properties of benzoxazine resins was seldom reported.…”
