A Novel Holistic Index for the Optimization of Composite Components and Manufacturing Processes with Regard to Quality, Life Cycle Costs and Environmental Performance

Abstract: In the present work, a novel holistic component and process optimization index is introduced. The Index is aimed to provide a decision support tool for the optimization of aircraft composite components and manufacturing processes as well as for the selection of the appropriate manufacturing technique of a component when various techniques are considered as manufacturing options. The criteria involved in the index are quality, cost and environmental footprint functions which are considered to be interdependent.… Show more

“…The tool implemented in the current study to assess the performance of the investigated components is an adaptation of a holistic approach initially introduced in [40]. The proposed model has been successfully implemented as a decision-making tool to aid stakeholders in selecting appropriate manufacturing methods [40] and recycling processes [6] while accounting for the technical, ecological, and economic features of the materials and/or processes applied. A quantitative index was derived as an output of the approach introduced in [40]:…”

“…The EoL Index introduced herein is an adaptation of the Index proposed in [30]; the latter was identified as a decision-making tool to aid engineers select an appropriate manufacturing technique for certain components as well as define the optimal process parameters for the implementation of each technique. The selected process parameters reflect a trade-off between quality, cost and environmental footprint of the existing component.…”

“…In a circular economy, the achievement of a closed-loop recycling (CLR) approach is the primary target across the recycling industries [30][31][32]. According to this approach, the valuable fibers from composite wastes, such as the carbon fibers, must be reclaimed, remanufactured, and reused into a new composite.…”
