Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) comprises thousands of tiny sensor nodes used in various monitoring applications to sense environmental conditions. WSN collects and organizes the sensed data and transmits to the Base Station (BS). Due to the limited battery energy of sensor nodes, optimal data collection and transmission techniques are necessary for the prolonged working of the sensor network. The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method is used in this paper to form the cluster in WSN and a Fuzzy based Energy Efficient Routing Protocol (E-FEERP) is proposed using energy of battery, average distance SN from BS, node density and communication quality to transmit data from Cluster Head (CH) to the BS optimally. The simulation results of the proposed E-FEERP is compared with the existing approaches, which show an improvement in the network performance-based parameters such as throughput, residual energy (RE), load balancing ratio and packet delivery ratio, energy consumption and network lifetime.

In this paper, the performance of hierarchical routing and fault tolerant routing scheme are combined and proposed a protocol named Hierarchical Energy Balanced Fault Tolerant Multipath Routing (HEBFTMR). Due to the hierarchical scheme adopted, cluster head energy level is saved. Cluster head in lower region can communicate to the higher region cluster head via the intermediate level cluster heads. Cluster head is changed frequently to equalize the load among the cluster members in the cluster. This cluster head is selected based on the following factors: residual energy, node weightage, distance between the neighbour nodes and the distance between the neighbour node and base station. Multipath routing is established to transmit data from the member node to the cluster head node for efficient data transmission. This is necessary due to the nature of sensors has frequent link broken. If the link is broken, neighbour node selection is important to route the data efficiently. The tolerant energy level of the sensor for route the data is determined. When the energy level decreases below the threshold value, other neighbour node is selected. Simulation results reveal that the proposed scheme proves that this combined scheme performs well when compared to the existing scheme in WSN environment.

Particle Swarm Optimization-Based Clustering by Preventing Residual Nodes in Wireless Sensor Networks

Particle Swarm Optimization based effective clustering in Wireless Sensor Networks is proposed. In the existing OEERP, during cluster formation some of the nodes are left out without being a member of any of the cluster which results in residual node formation. Such residual or individual nodes forward the sensed data either directly to the Base Station or by finding the next best hop by sending many control messages hence reduces the network lifetime. The proposed E-OEERP reduces/eliminates such individual node formation and improves the overall network lifetime when compared to the existing protocols. It can be achieved by applying the concepts of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) for cluster formation and routing respectively. For each Cluster Head, a supportive node called Cluster Assistant (CA) node is elected to reduce the overhead of the Cluster Head. With the help of PSO, clustering is performed until all the nodes become a member of any of the cluster. This eliminates the individual node formation which results in comparatively better network lifetime. With the concept of GSA, the term force between the cluster heads is considered for finding the next best hop during route construction phase. The performance of the proposed work in terms of Energy Consumption, Throughput, Packet Delivery Ratio and Network Lifetime are evaluated and compared with the existing OEERP, LEACH, DRINA, BCDCP protocols. The work is simulated using NS-2 simulator. The results prove that, the proposed E-OEERP shows better performance in terms of lifetime.
