A Novel Data Management Methodology and Case Study for Monitoring and Performance Analysis of Large-Scale Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) and Borehole Thermal Energy Storage (BTES) System

Abstract: Aalto New Campus Complex (ANCC) is a recently inaugurated educational facility at Aalto University, located in Otaniemi (Espoo), Finland. Within over 40,000 m2, it comprises two faculties, a shopping center, recreational areas, and a metro station. ANCC is also a large-scale application of Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP)–Borehole Thermal Energy Storage (BTES) in Finland, comprising an irregular BTES field of 74 boreholes with an overall length of roughly 23 km and 4 million m3 of energy storage. Therefore, accu… Show more

“…This research is based on the data gathered from Aalto New Campus Complex (ANCC) and its GSHP-GHE energy system, which has been introduced in detail in previous research [21] and analyzed in the present case study. Its 800 kW GSHP is connected to an irregular BTES field composed of 74 40mm-single-U groundwater-filled boreholes.…”

“…Data are taken on a daily basis: fluid temperatures from the DTS measurements and pumping flow rates taken from previous research [21] (assuming that total pumping is evenly distributed among the boreholes. The most relevant variables of borehole A19 are summarized in Tables 2 and 3.…”

“…During the same period, numerous interesting research studies were published in world literature concerning both general principles involving the application of data validation and reconciliation [11,12,14,[26][27][28][29][30] as well as its application for solving more specific problems. For example, they were presented in the publications covering the problems of nuclear power plants [31][32][33], chemical industry [34][35][36][37][38][39][40], power plants and combined heat and power plants [41][42][43][44][45][46], refrigeration [47], and biotechnology [48].…”
