A novel continuous colour mapping approach for visualization of facial skin hydration and transepidermal water loss for four ethnic groups

Abstract: There exists remarkable skin capacitance and TEWL gradients within short distances on selected areas of the face. These gradients are distinctive in the different ethnic groups. In contrast to other reports, we found that darkly pigmented skin does not always have a superior barrier function and differences in skin hydration values are complex on the different parts of the face among the different ethnic groups.

“…Biophysical parameters are strongly influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors like age, sex, race, circadian rhythm, season, exercise and acclimatization period; therefore data collection is inherently difficult to standardize. For TEWL, open measurement chambers are more vulnerable to environmental influences than are closed chambers; condenser closed chambers seem to be the most sensitive TEWL system, but this device type was not used in rosacea.…”

“…At the bottom of an internal cavity (an open chamber of a 1 cm ∅, 8 mm in depth), an electronic probe records the variation in Relative Humidity (RH) %, further expressed as g/m 2 /h after its calibration by the supplier (GPOWER, Seoul, South Korea). It is noteworthy that the latter found highly significant statistical correlations (r ranging 0.84-0.92, P < 0.001 and below), on different skin sites of 200 healthy Korean subjects of both genders, between the GPSkin Barrier â system and with the CM825 Corneometer â (SC's hydration) or the TM300 Tewameter â (TEWL), both instruments being marketed by the Courage and Khazaka TM company (K€ oln, Germany) [11,12].…”

“…Two different instruments were then successively used to: (i) determine the water content of the outermost layers of the stratum corneum (SC) or (ii) quantify the amount of water that insensibly crosses the epidermal structures (the Trans‐Epidermal Water Loss – TEWL), supplied by a rich dermal water reservoir. The latter results from both a dense blood network that diffused water and the high potency of dermal proteins (Collagen, Elastin, Glycosaminoglycan’s/GAG’s etc.)…”

“…Efforts have also been directed at overcoming the limitation of single‐point measurements given by TEWL and electrical methods for estimating SC hydration. Information on the heterogeneity of the status and hydration of the skin barrier was obtained by imaging the skin with contact‐based capacitance sensors and by interpolating single‐point measurements to generate continuous colour maps . Another approach to offer a more thorough evaluation of the skin barrier could be to combine macroscopic assessments with biophysical analysis techniques with the assessment of molecular markers of inflammation with skin molecular diagnostic tests, such as Transdermal Analysis Patch .…”
