A Novel Colocated Cross-Polarized Two-Loop PCB Antenna in the ISM 2.4-GHz Band

Abstract: This paper outlines the design of a co-located crosspolarized two-loop antenna for the ISM 2.4 GHz band. This antenna may be of interest to radar applications in the problem of finding the direction of arrival of a signal and in wireless applications that exploit polarization diversity. This antenna is an initial result towards the design of an electromagnetic vector sensor.

“…We find that the maximum capacity could be obtained if the field components corresponding to the polarizations of the transmit antennas are employed. In particular, for the channel matrix H = h 11 h 12 h 21 h 22 , h 11 and h 21 are the y and z magnetic field components produced by Tx 1 correspondingly and h 12 and h 22 are the y and z magnetic field components produced by Tx 2 correspondingly.…”

“…After the optimization, the following parameters of this antenna are determined: radius of loop = 28.5 mm, 2-mm-wide traces; bottom ground arms = 17 cm × 17 cm and top ground patch = 4 cm × 4 cm. The ULL is based on the Kandoian loop [12]. Fig.…”

“…Using the multi-polarized electric dipoles, the E x , E y and E z components can be utilized, but in order to make use of the H x , H y and H z components, the multi-polarized electric loops should be fabricated. However, the design of the co-located dual-polarized loop (DPL) is few [11], [12], and the tri-polarized loop (TPL) antenna are seldom seen. In fact, the design of co-located electric loops is generally more challenging than the design of the co-located electric dipoles.…”
