Measurement-Based Performance Comparison of Colocated Tripolarized Loop and Dipole Antennas

Abstract: In this paper, a co-located tri-polarized loop (TPL) antenna is proposed and a co-located tri-polarized dipole (TPD) antenna is also designed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) performance comparison. Both antennas have satisfactory performances of impedance bandwidth and isolation. The channel measurements are conducted in a non-lossy reverberation chamber (RC), a lossy RC, a corridor and an office room. For both antennas, the measured average correlation coefficients (CCs) in the non-lossy RC are the … Show more

“…Thus, it provides us a very suitable laboratory-produced environment to measure the performance of a MIMO system. The RC used in the measurement has a volume of 1.1 × 0.7 × 0.6 m 3 with two metal stirrers [8], which is depicted in Fig. 2.…”

“…As can be seen from (8), the value of ES is 0 if one of the eigenvalues is zero, which means the multipath is not sufficiently rich to support M parallel modes of communication and the channel is rank deficient. If all eigenvalues are equal, ES = 1.…”

“…It is well known that, besides SNR, the MIMO capacity also depends heavily on correlation properties of the channel matrix, which is decided by the complex interaction between antenna radiation characteristic and the surrounding environment. A MIMO system can only perform well if the channel elements are statistically independent [20]. In Figure 9, the Rx correlation coefficients (CCs) with respect to Tx port 1 of the SM array are described, and the results corresponding to other Tx ports are similar.…”

“…(ii) Spatially‐spread PSA (SS‐PSA) : As the name suggests, any two dipoles/loops in such arrays are spatially non‐collocated [8, 9]. As expected, SS‐PSAs are free from the high cost and difficulty for designing multi‐port antennas with high isolation and low mutual coupling [10]. Therefore, more practical applications can be found in existing radar and communication systems [11].…”
