With the rapid development of modern energy applications such as renewable energy, PV systems, electric vehicles, and smart grids, DC-DC converters have become the key component to meet strict industrial demands. More advanced converters are effective in minimizing switching losses and providing an efficient energy conversion; nonetheless, the main challenge is to provide a single converter that has all the required features to deliver efficient energy for different types of modern energy systems and energy storage system integrations. This paper reviews multilevel, bidirectional, and resonant converters with respect to their constructions, classifications, merits, demerits, combined topologies, applications, and challenges; practical recommendations were also made to deliver clear ideas of the recent challenges and limited capabilities of these three converters to guide society on improving and providing a new, efficient, and economic converter that meets the strict demands of modern energy system integrations. The needs of other industrial applications, as well as the number of used elements for size and weight reduction, were also considered to achieve a power circuit that can effectively address the identified limitations. In brief, integrated bidirectional resonant DC-DC converters and multilevel inverters are expected to be well suited and highly demanded in various applications in the near future. Due to their highlighted merits, more studies are necessary for achieving a perfect level of reducing losses and components.

SummaryIn this paper, a new bidirectional nonisolated DC‐DC (direct current–direct current) converter to interface microgrid energy storage systems is proposed. This converter is based on the classical bidirectional boost/buck converter, the most used converter in microgrids and can operate both in step‐down and step‐up modes. Besides that, this converter presents low number of components, low voltage and current stress on components, simplicity of operation, low current ripple from low‐side power supply, and two different modes of operation: synchronous and asynchronous. In addition, in this paper, the modeling, control, and power losses estimate of the proposed converter are carried out and the performance of the converter in different aspects of the microgrid application is evaluated, such as step load, abrupt power flux change, and transient analysis. A prototype of 1 kW, 144 to 400 V, is developed in the laboratory to validate the theoretical evaluations of the proposed converter. Besides that, the proposed converter is also evaluated under different dynamic condition which illustrates the effectiveness of the converter. Finally, the maximum efficiency obtained is 97.1% for 500 W working in step‐down operation.

The manuscript proposes a quadratic gain bidirectional converter (QGBC). The proposed converter is operated in two different stages—step-up (motoring) and step-down (regenerative braking)—which can be employed in electric vehicle (EV) applications. The converter is operated in the continuous inductor current mode (CICM). For regenerative braking (RB) of permanent magnet brushless DC (PMBLDC) motor, the self-inductance of the motor is exploiting to step up the back electromagnetic force (EMF) of the motor to extract the energy even at low rotor speed. The design parameters of the converter are selected as battery voltage V s = 48 V , output voltage V o = 200 V , output power P o = 1 kW , and switching frequency f s = 20 kHz . The design system is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink. Finally, a 1 kW prototype is developed for validation and performance analysis of the converter. The converter operates at maximum efficiency of 95% during step-up operation of the converter. A DSP microcontroller TMS320F28335 is used to control the switches of the converter in the experimental setup.
