A novel bi-directional shear mode magneto-rheological elastomer vibration isolator

Abstract: In this article, a novel bi-directional shear mode magneto-rheological elastomer–based vibration isolator has been designed, fabricated, and characterized to improve the dynamic response and identification of this class of “intellectual” mechanical devices. A heuristic embodiment has been realized in order to design such an isolator wherein both the vertical and horizontal directions can be operated only in the shear mode not only individually but also simultaneously. Two fixtures have been designed for perfor… Show more

“…Under the influence of an external magnetic field, the rheological properties of MRE vary as the magnetic force of attraction set between the ferromagnetic fillers alter the internal structure (Lu et al, 2012). These novel attributes of MRE have gained an increased interest in the development of semi-active vibration isolators (Gu et al, 2020; Jalali et al, 2020; Leng et al, 2020; Taghizadeh and Karamodin, 2019). The MRE resilient element in the isolator endorses its ability to adapt over a broadband of frequencies.…”

“…The response time for such materials is generally in the order of a few milliseconds (Zhu et al, 2018). Thanks to their rapid response, the MREs suggest attractive capacities for countless engineering applications, especially in noise and vibration control (Ahamed et al, 2018;Jalali et al, 2020;Qian et al, 2017). Moreover, MREs can be manufactured by implanting micron-sized magnetizable particles in a rubber-like matrix such as silicone or natural rubber (Winger et al, 2019;Woods et al, 2007).…”

“…As a smart finishing method, magnetorheological finishing (MRF) relied on the rheology of magnetorheological polishing fluids (MRPF) within external magnetic field to remove materials greatly (Jain, 2009;Song et al, 2013;Yang et al, 2016). Usually, MRPF is prepared by dispersing magnetic particles and abrasive particles in a base carrier fluid that containing a certain number of additives (Jalali et al, 2020;Mangal and Kataria, 2018;Xiu et al, 2018). when external magnetic field is applied, magnetic particles in the MRPF form a series of chain-like structures along the direction of the magnetic induction line, and abrasive particles are embedded between the chains (Barman and Das, 2018;Kordonski and Gorodkin, 2011;Nagdeve et al, 2018;Pan et al, 2019).…”
