A Novel Approach of an Absolute Encoder Coding Pattern

Abstract: This paper presents a novel approach of an absolute rotary and linear optical encoder codding patterns. The concept is based on the analysis of 2-D images to find a unique sequence that allows to unambiguously determine an angular shaft position. The adopted coding method allows to achieve a very high data density for specified number of tracks on the code pattern disc. Encoders based on the proposed solution enable the production from readily available and inexpensive components. Nevertheless, encoders retain… Show more

“…Many improvements of the gray code based pattern is reported [12][13][14][15]. Digital absolute rotary sensors which are not only accurate, light, small, and insensitive to EM interference but also characterized by their high resolution are reported, however, in these sensors, the encoder design is complex and contains numerous parts such as several light sources or an array of photo-detectors in the detection scheme [16][17][18][19][20]. Image rotary position encoder needs image sensor and image processing system to decode the response of the sensor from the coded information [21][22][23].…”

“…Increasing the number of (optical) sensing elements in such applications, naturally leads to camera-based solutions. In Reference [ 10 ], the authors present the approach that closely resembles idea from Reference [ 9 ], but with the use of a CCD sensor. As a slight modification, the authors of Reference [ 11 ] present the absolute rotary encoder that uses a CMOS sensor and barcode-like features radially arranged on a disk.…”

“…The encoders are classified as optical, magnetic, inductive, and capacitive according to their measurement principle. Optical and magnetic encoders are dominant in the market as they can achieve high precision, but they tend to be relatively expensive and bulky [2,6,7,8,9,10]. Currently, capacitive encoders have been gaining interest owing to their simplified design, potential for further miniaturization, insensitivity to magnetic field variation, long lifespan, low cost, and high measurement accuracy [5,10,11,12].…”
